Sample Lesson # 2

Sample Lesson #2
Topic for Lesson: What do Plants Need to Grow?

Lesson: Science
Level: Grade 4
Introductory Statement:
Students will understand that in order to grow healthy plants, soil water, light and air must be provided.

Task:
Students will participate in an experiment over a four week period to observe what plants need to grow using different conditions to find out and record what happens when plants are deprived of a basic item.
Students will collect things for experiment and share tasks in a cooperative manner.
Students will plant seeds and observe what happens after they were subject to different conditions, and photograph experiment at different stages of observation in the project.

Process:
1.Students will get into four groups.
2.One student from each group will do the digital photography, while the others participate in planting and other tasks for the project.
3.Students will get eight containers for the whole project, two types of seeds beans, corn potted soil, water.
4.Student from each group will photo graph what their group is doing as the experiment progress at each stage.
5.Students will plant seeds in containers, water seed and place container where it can get air and sunlight.
6.Observe and photograph growth of seedlings after a week or when they have sprout.
7.Subject them to different growing conditions.
8Condition # 1--- Plant has soil, light, and water but no air. Seal these plants in a large clear plastic bag.
9.Condition #2--- Plants has soil, water, and air but does not have light. Put these plants under a box or in a closet.
10.Condition #3--- Plants has soil, light, and air but no water. Do not water these plants.
11.Condition # 4--- This is the control group. The plants have soil, air, light and water.
12.Check seedlings each week and each group photograph what was observed under each condition.
13.Students from each group will discuss and present their findings with the class according to the condition that was observed.
14.Each group will come together and make one presentation with their photographs to show that when plants are subjected to the various conditions mentioned they do not grow healthy.
15.Students will make a class presentation of the experiment from the pictures using a bulletin board to display pictures.

Students from each group during the presentation will discuss what condition the seedlings were subjected to and show picture from display what was observed.

I will monitor group progress by observing what each group is doing and discussing with them what is being done in the group. Ask questions as to what is the cause why the seeds are not growing, based on the conditioned observed. Review things plants need to grow healthy.

The group will share their work by: 1. Talk about the procedure that was used in planting seeds.
2. Talking about condition that seedlings were subjected to in the experiment.
3. Talk about and show pictures of seedlings after one week, two weeks, three weeks,
Four weeks
4. Talk about what resulted in the state of the seedlings.

.
Conclusion: The presentation will be done as a group effort but will be presented by one student who was selected by the group to do the class
presentation.
